Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
Whether you are just beginning menopause (female) or andropause (male) or have been experiencing hormonal changes for a long period of time, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) may be the answer for you.
Bio-identical hormones are derivatives of plant extracts (typically soybean or yam) chemically modified on a molecular level to be structurally indistinguishable from the hormones made by our bodies. Typically, preparations of bio-identical hormones for BHRT may include the hormones progesterone, estradiol and testosterone.
BHRT is appropriate for both men and women of all ages, if you are experiencing symptoms from declining hormone levels (see “Self Assessment Quiz”).
Bio-identical hormones are customized for each individual patient and are prescribed to bring each patient’s hormone levels back into a healthy balance. We test and adjust the patients’ sex hormones and their metabolites, as well as their adrenal and thyroid hormones. Once the symphony of hormones is back in balance, patients achieve vitality, self confidence, a healthy libido, restful sleep, increased muscle mass, improved memory and concentration, a more stable mood and a cessation of hot flashes and night sweats.
Bio-identical hormones may be applied topically or taken orally or as injection, base on the patient’s customized therapy regimen.
Bio-identical vs Synthetic Hormones
Synthetic hormones (Prempro, Estratest, Provera, Premarin, and so on) are molecular cousins of the natural hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, but they are not identical in either structure or activity to the natural hormones they mimic.
Unlike synthetic hormones, bio-identical hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones your own body creates. Based upon your personal test results, bio-identical hormone prescriptions are custom-formulated to your body’s specific needs. They mimic your body’s natural hormone production, and your body recognizes them as a natural substance.
Uses for Bio-Identical Hormones
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is typically used for:
Alleviating the affects of menopause. The drop in hormone production that is a natural result of menopause can cause insomnia, lack of sex drive, weight gain, irritability, fatigue, mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, anxiety and depression. BHRT can help reduce or alleviate these symptoms.
Addressing reduced testosterone production in men. On average, a man’s testosterone level begins to decline after the age of 40. Also known as “male menopause,” or “andropause,” the drop in testosterone may cause reduced libido, depression and/or anxiety, erectile dysfunction and osteoporosis. Transdermal testosterone BHT can increase libido, boost self-confidence and energy levels, improve erectile function and increase bone mineral density.
